Travel by Bus and Shuttles
A scheduled bus service operates to destinations around the island and makes the journey into central Lerwick in five minutes. Those only going as far as Kirkwall will be met by a minibus which is timed to coincide with all arrivals and departures on the Lerwick to Aberdeen route.
Car Hire and Road Travel
Despite its ruggedness and remoteness, Mainland has a good network of roads and you can access most parts of the island. The Port of Lerwick is well signposted from Lerwick and elsewhere on the island.
If you haven't brought along your own car, Lerwick has many car hire companies on offer. Cars may be booked on your arrival; however, the best way to secure a vehicle is to book online in advance. Booking this way ensures that you get the best deal.
